I grew up the daughter of a career Army officer, and with that comes a great deal of personal pride in our nation. My childhood was filled with constant and everyday symbols and reminders of what makes our nation great.

Living on base, cars and life came to a halt at precisely 5:00 pm each day as Taps was played. Everyone stood, hats came off and hands went over your heart as the National Anthem was played before any movie started at the theater on base. Changes of command were filled with pomp and circumstance and beauty, and you knew the difference between dress blues and fatigues. MREs were a fun thing to play with when your father came home from the field and showed you his leftovers and you went to schools with names of great generals like Eisenhower and MacArthur. It is a unique childhood, one that I know many can relate to–one that I would never change for anything in this world. It made me proud of our servicemen and women, appreciative of all the sacrifices that their families make back home and absolutely proud to be an American.

A bit early, but happy birthday, America. May your flag fly high this Independence Day and always.
